Questions frequently asked …

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural state of mind that we all experience every day.  We all unknowingly enter a state of hypnosis when engrossed in a good book, watching a gripping movie or when performing a task such as driving, playing a musical instrument or painting.  It is often described as a focus on a single thought or action.

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic technique where the client and therapist work together to induce a deep state of relaxation using hypnosis.  This allows the client to become increasingly receptive to new positive ideas, behaviours and concepts which are designed to bring about the desired goal or self improvement.

Can anyone be hypnotized?

Most people who wish to be hypnotized can be.  You cannot be forced into hypnosis against your will.

What does hypnosis feel like?

Hypnosis feels different for every individual.  Most people describe a feeling of comfortable relaxation, sometimes heaviness of the arms and legs.  Some people feel as if they are in the middle of a daydream but it’s generally described as an enjoyable experience.

Will I lose control during the session?

Absolutely not, you will remain aware at all times during the session.  You will be able to hear, speak and move and   should you need to, you can get out of the chair and leave at any time with no adverse affects.  Hypnosis cannot make you do anything you don’t want to do and you should never be asked to do anything that makes you feel uncomfortable.

Will I reveal secrets whilst in hypnosis?

No. When in hypnosis, one is still very aware and mentally alert, so if someone doesn’t want to reveal something, they won’t.

Could I get stuck in a trance?

No.  This can not happen.  The hypnotherapist includes an arousal suggestion to bring the client back gently from the relaxed state.  If the therapist just left the room and did not return the client would just wake up and no harm would be done.  If an emergency were to arise the client would become aware and react in the normal way.

Will I remember everything that happens?

You can remember everything that happens, but, just like you often forget dreams, some things may slip

from your memory.

How safe if hypnosis and are there any side effects?

Hypnosis is completely safe and the only side effects are beneficial and positive ones!  It is non-addictive and relaxing whilst improving your life.

How many sessions might I need?

There is no set number of sessions as each individual is different and therefore the number of sessions will vary.  Some simple problems such as smoking or habit breaking may take only a couple of sessions whereas deep

rooted problems may require between 4 and 10 sessions.

How would I choose a hypnotherapist?

When looking for a therapist of any kind, it is wise to check that they hold professional qualifications and are a member of  a Professional Association.  This ensures that they have carried out the appropriate training and examinations and are bound by a strict code of ethics. Additionally CNHC registration is recommended as it is the only NHS recognised accreditation. Ensure a therapist is fully insured to practice.

Look for a therapist who offers a free initial consultation as this gives you an opportunity to be sure you feel comfortable with the person you have chosen.
